Whoever decided that Washington should be nicknamed the Evergreen State did not venture far from the Pacific. I did not even see this many corn fields in Kansas! The contrasts in this country are very dramatic and it is incredible how quickly the landscape changes. From the photos you will see that in Montana and Idaho we were cycling through forested valleys. Now, and literally after climbing over one hill, I am in semi-arid crop land. It is so hot and dry it is reminiscent of Missouri and Kansas - just hillier!
The cycling is also as difficult as the scenery. I have had a strong headwind for the last couple of days and it is draining. There is no stunning landscapes to distract you as you pedal - just endless yellow/gold fields. Except for the continuing hospitality of the locals, I am not really enjoying Washington so far. I was also warned by a Frenchman today that the winds get worse in the Columbia River Gorge, which I will reach tomorrow.
This afternoon I have reached the 'Australian sounding' city of Walla Walla. There is no camping, so I am going to try the Catholic Church here (hopefully they have heard of Downside Abbey!), otherwise it is going to be a rare expensive night in a motel.
Last night, I had an awesome stay in the town of Pomeray. I was allowed the camp in the fairground, which was empty and had showers. Plus, I was able to use the city pool for a dollar! I wish the UK had facilities like this. I bet the pool in Salisbury charges at least 5 pounds, plus you could not camp outside!
I have one request for you all after reading this. Please pray to the big man that the winds will calm down, as I could really do with some respite from them!
