I have managed to get the bicycle wheels fixed - some of the spokes had come loose. I am now armed with a spoke key, and hopefully sufficient knowledge, to do it myself next time!
I am now properly out of the Appalachians, which means the worse hills of the whole trip are over! As I move into Eastern Kentucky, the scenery is much more like the UK (except for the crazy heat and humidity). I have been through a couple of attractive university towns, Berea and Dansville, and it is the latter one that I am camping in tonight.
The man at the bike shop had done the Trans America a couple of times, so we had a good chat about what is to come. West of the Mississippi, the humidity should drop, but Kansas can apparently get very hot - sometimes 40 Celsius (but luckily that is later in the summer!). He said that if the dogs bark but do not leave the shade to chase you, then you should also be in the shade! When he used the phrase 'heat that burns your eyeballs', I got a little worried!
Talking about dogs, they are nasty here in Kentucky, but luckily no bites yet, but they can chase you for a while! The other day, a massive St Bernard ran for me, and I had my heart in my mouth for a split second, but it was tied.
Anyway, need to go and find myself some supper!
