Made it to Washington DC in one piece, and more importantly, so did my botched bag!
I am staying with Christiaan's (a friend from Amsterdam) mother, Diane, and it is nice to have all the home comforts - almost to the point that I might stay here for 3 months!
With this being my first real experience of the USA (I have been to both LA and NYC for a day each with work), I have to say, without sounding stupid, that everything is very American!! SUVs, big fridge, large porches, American flags outside houses and sweetcorn for supper last night!
Also, the French Open coverage was interrupted just a moment ago with a tornado warning! Yesterday was a beautiful evening, but it has rained and rained and rained today, with big storms. Maybe I should have brought my waterproof trousers! Not sure what I will be thinking when there is a tornado warning in Kansas, and I am in the middle of nowhere - it's not like I can hide under a bridge, as there are no bridges in that state!
Diane kindly took me down to the bicycle shop, but the Surly is yet to be completed, so hopefully I can pick it up tomorrow. Oh well, another excuse to stay in this beautiful house for longer! By the way, I need to name it, so any suggestions would be appreciated!
Tomorrow will be the sightseeing day, so will go to the White House, Capitol, Lincoln memorial, etc. Will also be nice to do it on the bike to test it, so I can go back to the shop to tweak any adjustments.
